Verify before you hire

  • Controlled electrical works must be carried out by a Registered Electrical Contractor and certified: check the contractor on the Safe Electric register (operated by RECI, safeelectric.ie), which is the statutory body designated under the electrical safety regulations.
  • On completion of controlled works you must receive a Completion Certificate confirming the installation is safe and compliant: confirm you'll get one.
  • Check the business is on the CRO or a registered sole trader, holds tax clearance, and carries public liability insurance.
  • Get an itemised written quote including VAT before work begins.

Warning signs of a cowboy

  • Not on the Safe Electric / RECI register, or can't give a registration number.
  • Won't issue a Completion Certificate for controlled works: uncertified work is illegal and can void insurance.
  • Cash-only with no VAT invoice, or a large deposit demanded up front.
  • No proof of public liability insurance.
